Acknowledging Minister Upston's announcement May 2, 2024
To be attributed to Dr Claire Achmad, Chief Children’s Commissioner:
I acknowledge the decision announced today by the Minister for Social Development and Employment, Hon Louise Upston, to restore a single Children’s Commissioner.
At this time of change for our Commission, I remain dedicated to delivering strong, independent advocacy for and with mokopuna – the children and young people of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Together with my Board colleagues, we will also take time to work with the Minister to understand more about the Government’s decision and next steps. We continue to hold the highest aspirations for all children and young people in our country, and remain steadfastly committed to working in service of them, for and with them, as their independent advocate.
During this time of change, you can expect to continue to hear from me as Chief Children’s Commissioner with strong, clear advocacy for and with mokopuna, supporting them to experience all their rights as children in all circumstances, at all times.
While there are going to be changes for the Commission, mokopuna and their whānau are continuing to experience significant change and uncertainty as well. I encourage everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand, and in particular the Government, to continue to prioritise our mokopuna for the taonga that they are.
I continue to welcome hearing from all children and young people throughout our country so that I have a sound understanding of their lives and experiences of their rights, and to inform ongoing independent advocacy.
