Petition of Josiah Tualamali’i: Inquire into solutions for youth justice

In 2023 Josiah Tualamali’i lodged a petition requesting that the government undertake an inquiry into best practice youth justice interventions (preventions and responses). On her last day in the role, Children’s Commissioner Judge Frances Eivers made a submission on this Bill outlining her support of Josiah’s petition calling for a youth justice inquiry.

It is with background knowledge and experience in listening to, and promoting, the views of mokopuna that this submission is made to advocate for the rights and well-being of mokopuna in the youth justice system and in places of detention. This submission pulls together evidence-based research and community-based models for the Select Committee to consider.
