The UN's Concluding Observations to Aotearoa New Zealand

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child assesses Aotearoa New Zealand's implementation of the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child and makes recommendations, called 'Concluding Observations', to our Government to improve life for all mokopuna in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In 2023, the Committee issued its sixth periodic report to our Government. Its Concluding Observations highlight strengths and areas needing improvement in safeguarding children's wellbeing and rights.

Specifically, the Committee asks our Government to urgently do better for:

  • Mokopuna Māori
  • Mokopuna who face discrimination
  • Mokopuna who experience violence
  • Mokopuna living away from their whānau
  • Mokopuna whaikaha (disabled children)
  • Mokopuna living in poverty
  • Mokopuna in youth justice
